What's a flook score?

We like great content - so the more great content you make, the higher your flook score becomes.

Your flook score is determined by whether people like your cards a lot (or not!). We take into account mainly these things:

  • How many different people collect your cards
  • How many of your cards are collected in total
  • How many of your cards are moderated / or voted out
  • How many followers you have

We use your flook score to push your cards higher in the card stream, and show them to more people. After all we all want something interesting to flook at, don't we?

What's collecting cards all about?

Think of a collected card as something like a bookmark on the web. If you find a card you like, you can quickly collect it by using the Collect button on the HUD:

You can find the cards you've just collected by tapping the Recently collected robot on the Find new tab. But the more interesting way to look at collected cards is to tap the Collected cards robot on the Find nearby tab. Here your collected cards are sorted by their distance from you - so collecting a card is just like bookmarking the world. You can quickly find out which nearby places you've thought might be worth a visit if you were in their vicinity.

So when flook gives you the scoop on that new uber bar that's just opened up in town, collect it!

And as an added bonus - when people add cards you made to their collection, you get extra flook points!

Why did you give me a username ending in "robot", "droid" or some animal?

We like robots, droids and most animals (although Tristan has an unreasonable fear of ferrets). And we want you to have a name right from the start. If you don't like it, just make an account on your phone and choose whatever name you want!

When and how does the card creator get my location?

When you first open up the card creator, it starts to refine the accuracy of its GPS fix. While the place name control is red or amber, the card creator will continue to update your location. As soon as the place name control turns green, your location is locked in, and you can walk away knowing that your card will be placed in the correct place.

Flook keeps crashing / won't start on my iPhone

First check that you're not trying to run flook on an old iPhone or an iPod. Flook needs to make use of the phone's GPS hardware, and also needs the bandwidth supported by 3G networks to download cards - because of this, flook only runs on 3G iPhones and above.

This doesn't happen often, but it usually indicates that flook's database has become corrupted. Sadly the only way to deal with this situation is to delete flook and reinstall it, which means that you'll lose any cards you have under construction.

To re-install flook on your iPhone:

  1. Press and hold the flook icon on your iPhone for four seconds until it starts to tremble, and delete the application. (Our server stores all your flooks except those cards under construction, so they will synchronise automagically later).
  2. Sync your iPhone with iTunes and make sure that the flook application is selected in the applications to synchronise. (Sometimes iTunes will change this option, so if you have problems, it's worth checking).

If for any reason you are still having a problem after these steps, then feel free to ask a question in our support forums or failing that you can contact us by email.

Why do cards not disappear from the inbox?

It's like email - cards don't disappear because you've read them. You should manually remove cards from the inbox using the toolbar. Tap once to bring it up, and then hit the remove button.

How do I delete comments on the iPhone?

You can delete comments you have made on other people's cards and any comments on your own cards. To delete a comment, flip the card over and select the comments tab (on the left side of the card back). Then simply swipe from left to right right across the comment you want to delete, and a red "Delete" button will appear. If you press the button, the comment will be deleted. (Be careful, because you can't undo this delete!) If you change your mind, just tap somewhere else on the comment, and the delete button disappears.

Can I move my cards?

Yes, you can. Flip one of your cards, switch to the map tab, and you'll see a lockbot in the top right hand corner. If you click him, the map unlocks and you can drag it around under the pin to reposition the card. Just click the lockbot again to lock in your new card position.

My card is in the wrong place - what can I do about it?

Just flip your card over and tap the lock-bot at the top right. That will free the pin from the map, and you can pinch, zoom and drag to your heart's content to position the card exactly where it should be.

Remember that when you are making cards, the background of the place name at the top of the card creator shows you how good flook's GPS fix is. Red is bad, amber is OK and green is perfect.

While the place name in the card creator is red or amber, flook is still updating your location. Walk away, and you might get the wrong place! But once you have a green fix, flook will remember your location and you're safe to move on.

What do the LEDs on the card pin mean?

The coloured bar under the card pin on the map on a card back shows how accurately flook thinks the card was placed. (It matches up with the colour you get in the card creator when you make a card.) If you weren't getting a good GPS reading, the LED will be red. If you got a great reading, it will be green. And if you moved your card a very long way, it will be grey, to show that you weren't really at the place (probably!).

What do the colours on the place name at the top of the card creator mean?

When you make a card, we get your current location using the iPhone's GPS unit so that we know where to place your card. If we can't get a good fix from the GPS (perhaps because you're inside or among tall buildings - flook needs a clear view of the sky to get a really good reading), then the place name box will be red. If you get a slightly better, but not quite good enough, fix, then the box will be orange. Once you have a good reading, the box will turn green.

Both the red and orange boxes animate - that means they're still requesting a GPS fix. If you walk away now, your phone might get a good fix a little later on, and your card will be wrongly placed. Once the box is green and steady, the location is locked in and you can walk away safe in the knowledge that your card will be placed correctly.

  1. The location box in the card creator.

If you edit a card you made earlier, you'll notice that the place name box is grey. This is because the location of the card is already determined - it won't change now, unless you flip the card to the map view and move its pin.

What's TweetJourney and how does it work?

Our friends at TweetJourney made a neat little app that can show you a map of your recent flooking endeavours. To enable it, you need to be sure that you've ticked "Add a location to your tweets" on your Settings page on Twitter. And of course you should enable Twitter in flook - just login on our Settings Tab. Once you have done those two things, you can happily click to see where you've been flooking on TweetJourney.

Can I use flook abroad without incurring data roaming costs?

Yes, you can, but it takes a while to get a fix the first time in a new location - commonly five minutes and we have heard of it taking up to fifteen minutes. The phone uses the local data network, either cellular or wifi, to help it know where the satellites are. When it doesn't have access to this, it takes much longer. Be patient and pay careful attention to the accuracy of the GPS fix, or find a free wifi access point to help it along.

Once you've got a good location for a particular area, flook should find your location much more quickly the next time you use it.

If you keep your phone in airplane mode to avoid costly incoming calls, all radios including GPS and wifi are disabled. A better option here is to remove the SIM card. Then you can safely use GPS and wifi without risking huge roaming charges.

Of course, the cards won't upload while you're without network access, but they will upload with the correct location once you connect again to wifi or a cellular data network, even if that's after you get home.

Why did my flook score / unread count go to zero?

If you have noticed that your inbox unread count, or your flook score goes to zero its possible the iPhone application has lost connection to the internet, don't worry as soon as it comes back it will update as normal.

Roger Nolan has such a sense of style - how can I update my look to be more like him?

Rog does look good, but don't despair, it's a simple look to carry off. The key thing is to make sure you wear all your head hair on your chin - once you have that part right, everything else will fall into place. Just finish off with a second-hand panama hat (Oxfam can be relied on here) and some very, very expensive shoes.

Are you going to do a version for my Symbian phone, Android phone, Blackberry, washing machine?

We hope so. The iPhone is a perfect platform for us to launch on, but we do want to flook the world, and that means we want to port our application to all the cool smartphones out there. Please head over to our forums and tell us which flook version floats your boat.

What do I do if I have a problem with an event / restaurant / discount I find on flook?

Flook often includes content from other sites and partner. These may include offers or discounts, or embedded third-party reservation system within flook. This content, offer and contract is between the original party making the offer and yourself, the user. The flook application is acting as a communication channel and Ambient Industries, the makers of flook do not offer support of any kind on these transactions.

If the contact details for any flook content are not clear, Ambient Industries will make their best effort to provide them to you by request.
